What is Extended Reality?

Extended Reality (XR) refers to all immersive technologies, from the ones we already have today as well as those yet to be created. All immersive technologies extend the reality we experience by either blending the real and virtual worlds or by creating a fully immersive experience. Currently there are three types of extended reality – augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).

Augmented Reality (AR)

Augmented Reality involves overlaying virtual information and objects onto the real world. The real world is then enhanced by this augmented experience with digital details like images, text, and animation. Hardware such as AR glasses, screens, tablets, and smartphones are used to experience AR. This means users are not isolated from the real world and are still able to interact with and see their surroundings.

Virtual Reality (VR)

In a virtual reality experience, users are fully immersed in a simulated digital environment. Individuals must put on a VR headset or head-mounted display to get a 360 -degree view of an artificial world that fools their brain into believing they are

Mixed Reality (MR)

In mixed reality, digital and real-world objects interact with each other in real-time. This is the latest immersive technology and is sometimes referred to as hybrid reality. To access MR a headset is needed as well as significantly more processing power compared to VR or AR.
